Every job experience has its perks and drawbacks. Some people go into a job with no experience while others go into one with full experience. Working in retail is certainly not for everyone. With that being said though, all retailers have different paces at which they function and different people adapt differently, which allows for all the options. However, with all the variety, there are certain aspects and work ethics that are expected when working in the retail industry in a majority of the sites similarly. One must know how to deal with different types of people. One must be able to handle different tasks at different times. Maybe all at once sometimes. Consequently, there are positives and negatives of the retail environment that all individuals interested and already working must be aware of.

Let us all rejoice in the fact that we get a discount. Anything to save a few bucks right? All retailers have ranges of discounts but we cannot complain. Anything to get that woven sweater for $15 instead of $25.

If you are anything like me, you have "a passion for fashion." Working in retail you get the first view on what will be "in" during each season. You get to plan ahead for the summer. Think about it, you are a few steps ahead everyone else.
Customer service experience.
Having this strength is not only essential in the retail industry. Being able to provide the customer with a positive and memorable experience will be key in any field you seek to partake in. The ability to be able to sell a product and interact with an individual in a friendly manner gets an individual a long way.
The bad. The sad.
Wanting to spend one's check at the job.
Maybe you have been eyeing that outifit all week but do not have the money just yet. Once you get the funds you spend it all on it. Than you end up with nothing for lunch for the rest of the week. Bummer. At least you will look nice.
The not so friendly customer.
There will be that one customer that you will run to the back when she or he enters the store. You can be the sweetest, friendliest, most helpful person sales representative and still people will walk all over you. Customers get whatever they want. Do not lose your cool though, it will be okay.
Schedule conflicts/ lack of hours.
For the most part you will get a different schedule each week. One week you will get a solid 15 to 20 hours and make some money while the next you will get 5 to 10 and make just enough for your meals.
These are all several tips and tricks that people getting into a retail setting must be aware of. Many people find great success in this field, others will not but it is all about trial and error.
