Working is a key part in keeping afloat in any college life, but is it really worth working at school?
School in of its self is quite a hassle, especially when you are a full time student. But what if you are in a major on a different site or even everyday? It will make it tough for you.
I am in Criminal Justice, I am full time and I work as a cook/food prep in the schools dinning hall. Trying to have a job and keep schooling up is hard as it is, but from my experience most of my co-workers and even myself dislike working there.
Now, the management is amazing for the most part, you'll always have that one manager that is strict about everything and isn't the best. But it is the hours that kills your chance to earn decent money. In my time working on campus, it has been a rough time. At least for my job, you don't really get to work on breaks. Now some of you may be saying that's not an issue for them because its more time to themselves, and that is totally fine. But from my point of view its damaging to the financial aspect of my bank account.Money isn't the only thing about working on campus that makes it rough, at my particular college we have three campuses, all about 15 minutes away from each other. So the drive between three campuses and back to go to work is not the most ideal for a full time student. That part of it is more of a minor drawback but it is worth considering before getting a job on campus.
The other aspect is hours. Hours more or less combines everything, it determines how much money you earn, and determines your schedule for practically the whole week. As for me, I have classes Monday through Thursday, and I work Friday through Sunday.
But hours at a college campus will fluctuate A LOT, and it is really out of your control for the most part. For my college, the weekends have different hours, making you work a split shift, from ten through two and four through eight. Working on campus have many drawbacks to it, but it's not all bad, you get free food.
