Before coming home from school this past summer, I swore up and down that I would never work in food service. I thought it was way too much work for not enough money. Plus, I really didn't want to have to deal with all of the clean up that came with food service.
I applied everywhere around my house at retail jobs, and after about a week of waiting (I know I'm impatient) for jobs to call back, I decided to apply to a bar and grill. I started working the next day.
I worked for 13 hours my first day, and it kicked my butt, to say the least. I wasn't expecting it to be as fast paced and as busy as it was that day. Regardless, I learned food service isn't that bad after all, and it is so much better than working in retail.
I was a cashier a few summers ago, and it was the most boring job in the world. I dreaded going to work some days or certain hours because I knew I would basically be standing there doing absolutely nothing. Although it was nice to get paid to just stand there, it made the days way too long and way too boring. I found myself constantly staring at the clock.
After working at a bar and grill for the past few weeks, I'll definitely be staying in food service for a long time. I've been in the kitchen, bar-tending, and serving. Let me tell ya, you stay busy, and it is well worth the money.
As I said before, I thought the clean up would be bad, but it isn't. I was the busboy at one point, too, and that actually isn't as bad as it seems. At times it may get a hot, but it's not the end of the world. It gives you something to do, and your shift goes by quickly.
If you're anything like me and tried to avoid food service, don't. It isn't as bad as it seems on the outside, and you get to meet tons of people (in fact, I met someone today from Australia). Try not to be so close-minded and experience new things. It may be worth it in the end.
