Why Everyone Should Work With Special Needs Children

I have a very special spot in my heart for children with disabilities. I always knew I wanted to help children with special needs who is exactly why I want to become a speech pathologist. I have been working with children with special needs for about two years now. During the school year I work in a special needs room and during the summer I'm a camp counselor for children with disabilities. I love both of these jobs for a variety of reasons. I hope everyone has a chance to experience the wonderful gifts I received from working with special needs children. They help make the world so bright. I learned so many things from them and I could not thank them enough.

Thank you for teaching me how to.....

Be Patient

You have taught me that it's okay if you don't get it the first time. It takes time to get some things done no matter who you are. Not everything in life is a race. Some people need to take their time in order to understand something. I learned that you have to be patience when it comes to speaking. It may take you a couple of tries to understand what the child is trying to say. You learn that sometimes it's hard for them to express themselves.

Appreciate The Little Things

You have taught me to appreciate the little things. Sometimes the smallest things in life are the most rewarding. The little things count the most like writing your name, opening your juice box, or tying your shoes. You don't appreciate the little things in life when you are able to do all without any problems. You taught me that life is about appreciating everything.

Think Positively

You have taught me to think positively no matter what. Not everything is going to go your way. You need to overcome challenges and learn from them. You need to keep an open mind. You taught me that if you think positively the results come out positively. If you think positively after all you have overcome from then I can think positively in life.

Be A Kid Again

You have taught me how to act like a kid again. When I was little all I ever wanted to do was become an adult but now that I'm all grown up, I wish I still was a kid. When I'm with you I'm still a kid. I can still play tag, draw with chalk, dance/sing horribly, and have the biggest imagination. You taught me how important being a kid really is.

Love Unconditionally

You have taught me how to love unconditionally. I can't thank you enough for teaching me this. I know I'm a better person now because of this. I truly understand what it means to be happy for someone else. You have taught me how to put someone else before myself. I learned how happiness is all you need in life. You love everyone unconditionally and I hope one day I can too.

We don't buy into these... just like how we don't buy our friends.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
