What's Work Without Rewarding Yourself With A Little Play?

While it's great to strive for success, just remind yourself to treat yourself for it.

I have to say, for a generation who coined the term 'fleek' and uses the term 'bae' as an endearing word to use towards a loved one - millennials are honestly some of the hardest working people I've ever met. Our generation bust their a** working 2-3 jobs to pay for school and stay out of debt. Our generation is living on their own at the early ages of 20 and beginning to try and further their careers. We juggle full time jobs while taking 15-21 credits every semester in order to succeed. Regardless of what the older generation thinks, millennials are some of the most motivated people you could ever come across.

Now, if you're anything like me, you probably take on too much at once because you don't like to pass up a good opportunity. Aside from taking 6 class this Spring semester to make sure I can graduate on time (I was a semester behind,) I'm working a full time overnight job, I'm about to begin training to be a crisis counselor and I have the honor of being able to be a part of Odyssey. Needless to say, I have a lot do at all times.

Usually, after a long shift or a long school day, I go straight home and go to bed. It's either that, or I go home and cry (sadly, this is too true of a story.) I don't go out much mostly because I'm either too tired or I just don't feel like making the drive - but mostly I'm just scared it's gonna be a waste of my time and no one will want to go out with me.

Okay people, listen to me. Go the f**k out when you can.

I have learned that it is so important to give yourself a day to just let loose and enjoy yourself. It's important to put all of your work and school related issues on the back burner and get out that stress. It's important to remind yourself that it's okay to have fun and you earned a night off.

Sitting inside my apartment night after night staring at a computer screen isn't just sad, but it's also not good for my mental health. It's not healthy for me to do so much work, and not allow myself to play. It's not healthy for me to sit by myself night after night. It's important for me to take a break and have fun with my friends. It's important for me to have a Malibu Bay Breeze and dance the night away.

And it's important for you to enjoy yourself too. I'm not saying go wild every weekend. I'm not saying blow off your work. I'm not saying lose that strong work ethic you have - because that ethic is going to take you a long way. I'm saying it's okay to take a step back one day a week to breathe. It's okay to procrastinate a little, and it's okay to have a good time.

After all, the work will still be there tomorrow.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
