“What do you want do you want to do with your life?”
The question that high school freshman me would always dread to be asked. To be quite honest, at that time I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.
Fast forward to college freshmen me and I no longer dread that question. In fact, I am always excited to meet a new person, because I know that they will ask that question. This is because I now know what I want to do with my life.
So let’s try this again. “What do you want to do with your life?”
I want to spread joy and smiles. I want to work with kids. I want the excitement of working in a medical setting. I want to look forward to going to work every day. I want to be inspired by my work and the people I am with. I want to work in the field of pediatric oncology.
That is my response to the question of what I would like to do with my life. Unfortunately, most responses to my career choice are not positive. I usually get negative responses back such as: why would you want to work in such a sad field? Your happiness will be destroyed by working in this field. Why would you do this to yourself? Why do I want to work in such a sad field?
I simply want to make a difference in this world. I think that I want to bring joy and smiles to a place where they may be needed the most. The individual defines their own situation, and I do not see this field as something negative that I am pushed away from, if anything I am drawn more to it.
Will my happiness be destroyed by working in this field?
I am fully aware that working in this field will be difficult at many times, there will be many hardships that will need to be faced. But honestly, that comes with any job.
I am choosing to focus on the good in this field, for the times of celebration. Because life is a celebration at every stage, and we must never forget that. Why do I want to do this to myself?
These children never intended to have to go through such hard times early in their lives. However, these children are brave and courageous standing up against cancer, and that is truly admirable. I only hope that I could be as brave and courageous as them. These children are truly inspirational, and I think it would be an honor to be able to work with them.
Happiness can never be destroyed, but rather multiplied. I believe in my heart that everyone is on this Earth for a reason, to serve a purpose that is much larger than themselves.
I believe that is it my purpose to bring joy where it is needed the most. If I know that I can make a child happy, I have done my job right.
I am never dismayed from working in this field, rather I am excited. I am excited to make a difference. I am excited to work with such inspiring people. For my job to have a meaning.
I want to dedicate my life to making others lives better. That is why I want to work in the field of pediatric oncology.
