Simple Words, Complex World

Simplicity is a beautiful creature that gallops across the page serenely, detached from pretenses, alive with magnitude.

"My mother is a fish." ~ William Faulkner - As I Lay Dying

Okay, so maybe this isn't the beauty that you had in mind, but the same man once said:

"So never be afraid. Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If you, not just you in the room tonight, but in all the thousands of rooms like this one about the world today and tomorrow and next week, will do this, not as a class or classes, but as individuals, men and women, you will change the earth." ~ William Faulkner

Of course this quote calls to mind the emotional inner turmoil and erratic dissonance that scatter the US (if not the globe) in the wake of Trump's first two weeks as president. I cannot deny the presence seething fear that wafts through my household with every stroke of this man's pen, every false statement that he utters, every person he appoints to "run" the country's most important agencies. My mind and heart hold a mélange of confusion, anger, and sadness as my unblinking eyes survey the carnage that one man has created in the wake of so many people shouting opposition at his actions and words.

But, this is not supposed to be about Donald Trump. He already gets too much attention. This is supposed to be about simplicity of words, and how I simply cannot master the art of crafting meaning from simple sentences.

"A Sort of a Song" ~ William Carlos Williams
"Let the snake wait under
his weed
and the writing
be of words, slow and quick, sharp
to strike, quiet to wait,
sleepless.
-- through metaphor to reconcile
the people and the stones.
Compose. (No ideas
but in things) Invent!
Saxifrage is my flower that splits
the rocks."

There are many benefits to delivering verbose lines, woven with thick imagery, laden with social commentary and historical reference. Sometimes, however, some authors are able to use simple language to strike a perfect balance between description and depiction.

It's Black History Month, and part of what inspired this article was my attempt at describing the anger, fear, and sadness generated by the actions and words of the Trump administration. In searching for inspiration for my own writing, I came across the words of Amiri Baraka. Formerly known as LeRoi Jones and Imamu Amear Baraka, this poet and playwright caused extensive controversy with "Somebody Blew Up America", a poem that asks questions and implies his own attitudes toward political oppression. The words are very simple, but the arrangement and presentation are such that passions are stirred, and comfort zones are demolished.

Love.

"Somebody Blew Up America" ~ Amiri Baraka

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
