Being young in this world is hard now without someone older to look up to. In my case, I was one of the older ones in my family and I had to learn everything by myself. Discovering the world by before my younger cousins was a challenge because our parents were still learning about parenthood themselves and they didn't know what was right from wrong. I want to make sure that my younger cousins don't have to go through any tough challenges without guidance from their older cousins.

1. Always respect your parents

Respecting your parents is one of the main guidelines to follow while growing up. Your parents are still learning with you, but just know that what they are doing in life is all for you and to make sure your life is the best it could be. Your parents got to see how your older cousins acted before you were born, and now they trying to figure out what works best for them. Try your hardest to give your parents some slack because raising children is hard especially if you are the first born. Don't be mean to your parents because it makes them just as upset as you are and then they will feel like they are doing something wrong. They aren't, they are just doing their jobs.

2. Always tell your parents you love them

Saying these three simple words, "I Love You" to your parents can go a long way. They know you are growing up and they know it can be embarrassing to those words but I promise when you say them, you can make your parent's days. Even after having a fight with them, always say it because if you don't they will think that you don't love them even if you do.

3. Don't talk back to any adults

Talking back to anyone can be read as being rude and nasty and your parents don't want that kind of attitude in their lives. Talking back will just get you in more trouble. You might think that what you are saying is valid and important, but with attitude it can be misread.

4. Don't be afraid of family time

Family time with all of your cousins can be a really fun and memorable time for everyone! Family will forever be your first friend! Don't be afraid to go to your aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents to help escape your own family because trust me, they have experienced them before you so they know how to help you.

5. Don't be afraid to be yourself

Being yourself is hard in a family because everyone is comparing you to everyone else but you. I promise you if you start acting like yourself, they won't be comparing you to anyone else but you.

So little cousins, please understand this advice because I promise you, it will making growing up a lot easier. Don't be afraid to call your older cousins and ask them how they dealt with certain situations. Keep on being you and stop growing up so fast.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
