To The High School Senior,
Congratulations. You just got the acceptance letter to the college that you have had your heart set on! You have just a few months before you pack all of your stuff, move into the dorm, and be on your own. But I know you’re asking yourself, “What do I need to do between now and then?” Here are some tips that I learned that made my transition much easier in the long way.
First, as you and your parents know college is really expensive. It is tough to pay for it all and that’s where scholarships, grants, and loans come into play. To receive your federal loans, and state grants such as the HOPE scholarship or Pell Grant if you’re in Georgia, you must fill out the FAFSA. This is a tedious but necessary step. I suggest doing it as soon as your parents file their taxes, because that is all you need. I also suggest doing it with your parents around, so they can help you. It gets easier the more you do it, and you will have to do it every year that you are in school.
Now, you know how you’re going to pay, but where are you going to live? If you are planning on living in the dorms as many schools require, apply early to the floorplan that you want. This can be the difference from sharing a bedroom to having a full apartment to yourself. If you are going to live in a private apartment complex, go check them out and sign as soon as you know, because they will fill up.
Next, start getting household items that you may need. Cookware, silverware, glasses, coffee pots, and everything else you need to live comfortably. Once, you know who your roommates are find out what they are bringing and if they don’t mind sharing some items. Side Note: It is totally cool if you don’t want to share your cookware or other items, but don’t get angry when roommates don’t let you borrow one of theirs when you haven’t done dishes in 2 weeks.
Most importantly, prepare yourself. You are going to be on your own. Without mom and dad there every day to remind you to do laundry, do homework, or eat healthy, you may forget what you’re there for. Spend time with the friends that aren’t following you to your new campus. Keep your countdown going, but it will go faster than you expect.
