My Wonderful, Funny, Intelligent, and Epic Little Brother,
In just a few short weeks, I will be moving over two hours away to begin my freshman year of college while you will begin your freshman year of high school. It's a thrilling time for us both, but also very edgy. As we approach these milestones in our lives, I want you to remember a few things; just some advice from the sister who loves you dearly.
1. I am only two-and-a-half hours away.
It may seem like a great distance, and it is far enough away I won't be able to see you everyday, but anytime you need me, I will always do my absolute best to come home and console you. Honestly, comprehending the fact that I won't be around you 24/7 like I'm used to will be the toughest adjustment for me in college. If anyone tries to pick on you or if a girl complicates your life, I will not hesitate to come home and correct it. Or if you just need me to take you for a Sonic run, well, I'll probably come home just to do that.
2. Don't think you need a girlfriend in high school.
The pressure will be on as to who you should date or, in a guy's instance, how many girls you can date. You will find a gal you absolutely "love," she will break your heart, and you honestly believe the world will quit spinning. If (when) that happens, just call me. I was a girl in high school not long ago and trust me, they are NOT worth getting upset over.
3. Be a friend.
I believe you are very mature and "grown-up" for your age that I may not need to include this, but never be mean or hateful. High school students love to do everything in their power to put everyone else below them; a concept I will never understand. Don't let them under your skin. It's easier said than done, but I will tell you every time I talk to you to ignore the haters. It makes life so much easier and they will eventually want the happy-go-lucky attitude you have. Let others see God working through you by being the friend that Jesus was to all people during His time. Be kind and considerate of everyone. A caring and generous attitude just makes you a more positive person and in turn better equips you to handle any situation thrown your way.
4. You've got this.
If you ever become the student like I was (and still am), you will absolutely hate yourself for making one bad grade. Don't stress yourself over academics so much that you will ultimately fail from being too stressed, but always strive to do your best and learn from your mistakes. You get what you give and it will pay off when you are my age and making college decisions while looking at a pretty scholarship.
5. Do NOT take that puff, pinch, sip, or invite.
You will be tempted to look big and bad by doing big and bad things. You won't be held against your will to, but you will get offers. DO NOT ACCEPT THEM. You are too precious a person to wind up doing things that will harm your body and ultimately your soul.
6. God's got your back.
As much as I would love to hear about and help you with all of your problems, some things you won't want to tell me, and that's understandable. Those times when you feel you can't open up to anyone, God is always there. Any problems that arise, no matter how big or small, God will help you overcome them. Even situations you open up to me about, continue to talk to God about them. He will give you the comfort and strength I, unfortunately, will never be able to fully supply.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)
Though we are coming upon exciting yet anxious milestones, I want you to remember most of all that I love you so, so, so much and am always here for you, whether it be by a text or phone call, or I will be home in almost no time.
With Great Love,
Your Big Sister
