For the past 16 years, I've been a big sister, and recently I've been told that I give pretty damn good big sister advice. This revelation has given me a desire to help all those that were not as fortunate as my little sister to have as big sister as wonderful as I am. So, as followed, are ten words of wisdom to make your life easier.
1. Friends
Friendships shouldn't be forced or one-sided, if it feels that way, then you're probably not as good as companions as you think you are.
2. Dying Relationships
Everything runs it's course, sometimes all you do need to put a little TLC in to make it work. But if it's getting to the point where you are getting upset and saddened by the relationship (friend or romantic), then just end it.
3. Significant Others
Don't settle and when it's right, you'll know. Don't waste your time or anyone else's; be respectful and honest and always have your eyes open.
4. Parents
Sometimes arguing isn't worth it. They probably won't admit they're wrong and they have the power to make life miserable for you. Sometimes you have to suck it up, cupcake.
5. Clothes
Styles and fashions change, so don't worry about it too much; dress for you, not some Meryl Streep 'Devil wears Prada' fashion queen who'd mock you no matter what.
6. Cars
ALWAYS make sure you've got more than half a tank of gas in the winter and that if you can't change a tire, you know someone who can.
7. Jobs
Doesn't matter how much fun they are, they still suck. Put in your time and get the hell out. In high school, you're usually there just to make money, anyway.
8. Being Heartbroken
Everyone gets sad and feels down, but what defines what kind of person you are and who you can become is how you react when you're sad and upset. Take a deep breath, drink a cup of coffee, wash your hair, put on some mascara and kick ass.
9. Gossips
You are human and, by definition, flawed. Don't listen and don't worry. If they weren't talking about you they'd be talking about someone else. It's not as personal as you would think.
10. Life
When you're all alone in the nursing home at the age of 103, are you going to look back on your life and be proud of you decisions and the way you rebounded from your mistakes? If not then maybe you should rethink some things.
