As we come to an end of National Infertility Awareness week, I thought it appropriate to give the world a word on what infertility is like.
Imagine that from the time you turned five years old, all you wanted was to grow up and be a doctor. You go through your elementary, middle school, and high school years knowing that this is your future so you plan accordingly by staying focused and getting the best grades you can while taking the hardest classes. It comes time for college and you get accepted to the school of your dreams! Everything is going perfectly. Then, you graduate. You are ready to finally step into this role that you have been dreaming about your whole life, but, no hospital will give you a job. First, you tell yourself it won't be long. Eventually, there will be an opening and you will be chosen. Months go by. You see all of your college peers and friends getting accepting into the residency of your dreams, but you keep getting denied. You don't understand why. You did the same work, your resumes are identical, but you just can't start working. You start to think that it might be because of something you did or just something about you, but the result is the same. Years go by. Your friends have been working and have flourishing careers, and meanwhile you seek more counsel and take classes just to bide your time looking for an answer or a solution that might never come.
This is what infertility is like. Only the dream is to be a mother (or father), the plan is building a solid family foundation and safe environment, and the goal that is always just out of reach is a child. The only real difference is, that the doctor will most definitely get a job being a doctor.
1 in 8 couples suffer from infertility for a number of causes. Whatever the reason, the result is heartbreaking. Everyone deserves the right to build the family of their dreams. #NationalInfertilityAwarenessWeek
