Everyone has had at least one English class, or, really, just any one class in which they've had to write a paper, an essay, something of the sort, and they've had a word limit.
The teachers would always say, if you can't say it in these amount of words, then your paper is full of useless words. Essentially, your paper if full of filler words.
I'm gonna go ahead and say enforcing a word limit is one of the laziest things a teacher could ever do. It is also one of the most disrespectful things that anyone could ever do to any intelligent being.
Now, I do understand having a word minimum. Yes. If your paper is supposed to be about the history of the recorded universe, then writing a mere 200 words is likely cutting it short. I do understand that there has to be at least some material in order for an argument to be made and for it to be sound.
What I do not understand is that some think it just to cut an argument short.
I've actually heard some teachers, teachers who are supposedly invested in the education of all, say that they do not want to take the time to read through all of the arguments.
Of course, I do understand that some students simply should not be allowed to write to a certain extent. Some writers babble on and repeat themselves and speak in a flurry of stupidity.
Simply stop reading it. Go ahead and give an awful grade. Fail the student for the paper for all I care. It's a class. Teach them to become better writers. However, please, do not restrict the bright and curious by enforcing that they write only a certain amount, because, "You simply cannot write this much about the topic that I am assigning." The fact of the matter is maybe the student actually knows more about the topic. Maybe the student, actually, is smarter. Maybe the student is a better writer than even you. For the love of God, let the student write.
In the real world, grammar is cool. It has function. Meaning is good. It gives flavor to our thoughts. It expands our known sensation. Never once have I ever heard of somebody that actually can get enough of something really amazingly and unbelievably good.
The topic of writing limits is not limited to writing in academic works. It should really be applied to anything, except for when the purpose of the writing is to be casual and streamlined in its share (ex. Twitter).
Writing shouldn't have restrictions other than when they are directly tied to its purpose. Academic writing has crucial information that must have no distractions. Writing for platforms means that you write with criteria so that all works can be compiled in order to elevate a goal.
Writing should lead to an extraordinary creation in imagination and expression.
Never let anyone take it away from you.
