Why I Won't Write 'Serious' Articles

The world is a dark and scary place as is!

Why I Won't Write 'Serious' Articles

Oftentimes, the trending articles are about topics such as politics, rape, depression, abuse, and literally anything and everything that makes you afraid of life and the world you're in.

I'm not here to do that.

The world is dark enough. I know it's important to be informed, but there are already so many people doing the informing already. When I go on to Odyssey's main page to scroll through articles, I see article after article of the same subjects before I finally find something that strikes my attention.

Every time I log onto Facebook, Twitter, or even Instagram, there are still more articles and posts about how terrible some person's life is, or how depression can be invisible, or how one of the candidates is going to put us all at risk of something serious, or how some new disease is incurable. The list goes on...and on... and on. How often do you feel happy when you finish browsing webpages and social media? Probably never (unless you have Facebook friends who are like me and share nothing but photos/videos of cats or memes).

Once you've been informed of these topics, why do you continually seek out that which upsets you? I find that we too often dwell on darkness.

Writing about these subjects is even harder than reading about them. An article may take a person half an hour, or it may take him or her multiple days to perfect. That is a lot of time focusing on depressing subject matter, and that really does take a toll on an individual. I love coming up with creative and bizarre topics to write about for my audience. People may not take me seriously because I write articles about why poop is commonly referred to as "number 2," how one can be classified as a "Basic White Girl," and what 11 of the weirdest things on the internet are, but how often do people finish my articles and feel scared or upset?

My articles are here to surprise you, to interest you, and most importantly to make you smile. People might think I'm not "taking my writing seriously," but truthfully-- I'm taking my writing seriously, but I'm not taking life too seriously. Life is simply too short to waste it away making ourselves sad and afraid. Again, yes, serious articles are definitely valuable, but there are enough of them. Why do you need another?

For all of you who want an escape from the depressing darkness of our world, may my articles always put a smile on your face!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
