It's absolutely no secret that Pokemon Go is rapidly taking over as the new technological craze. Players can catch and train Pokemon all while walking around. It's Pokemon meeting the real world (as much as is possible) with an addition of light exercise. Who wouldn't become obsessed with such a game?
Well...I, for one, am not exactly jumping up and down at the chance to join this phenomenon. That said, I understand why others find it so appealing. I was a major fan of Pokemon myself; I watched the show religiously and spent all my allowance money collecting trading cards. So a love of Pokemon itself is something to which I can certainly relate. However, I feel no personal urge to partake in Pokemon Go.
That's not to say that I haven't played it already. One night, I was out with my friends, and I helped them set up their own accounts while also helping them catch a few Pokemon. And it was fun...for the first 15 minutes. After that I found it underwhelming and a bit boring.
I guess part of that has to do with my love of reading. I constantly try to surround myself with words. Most of my conscious hours are spent reading physical books, and when I'm on the internet or social media, I like to read articles or other forms of people's thoughts. I find comfort and inspiration within the usage and structure of words, so staring at a screen with no literary content for long periods of time is fairly dull to me.
Another reason I'm not too big of a Pokemon Go fan is the way the game is actually played. Like I said earlier, it involves people walking around in order to catch Pokemon, and that's perfectly fine. At least people are getting some exercise while gluing their eyes on their screens. It's actually the eyes-glued-to-the-screen part of which I'm not too keen. When I'm forced to leave the comforting embrace of my books, I like to be as present in the world as possible. I like to take in the world and the people around me. When out with my friends, I prefer eye contact and stimulating conversation over steady silence interrupted only by taps on a phone keyboard. In my mind, it's hard to have the sort of awareness I enjoy when I'm too busy searching for Squirtle.
All of that said, these are just my own personal opinions about Pokemon Go: I'm in no way claiming my thoughts are more righteous than anyone else's. If you play Pokemon Go, then good for you. I'm happy you enjoy the game so much. These are just a few of the reasons why I don't find it an entertaining game for me.
