Having a job is hard, especially as a student. We need money (badly), but juggling classes, long semester breaks and the desire to be flexible with our schedules is hard to manage.
Wonolo aims to fix that. Their app allows for you to pick up work with tasks ranging from warehouse, delivery, or admin duties -- all with the click of the button. It lets businesses get tasks done and gives people opportunities to make some extra money when they want to.
This is especially great for students who are home for weekends or breaks. Normally for the entire month of winter break I wouldn't be able to work, leaving me penniless and bored once all my friends started to go back for their spring semesters.
With the rise of careers through apps like Uber and Lyft that are based on setting your own hours and being your own boss, Wonolo fits in perfectly. While the companies set how many hours you will be working and the kinds of tasks you will be doing, all of that information, as well as how much you will be paid, is all given to you upfront before you accept the task. This way you're able to pick and choose the types of jobs, the hours, and the pay that you want to accept.
But Wonolo isn't just great for people who want to pick up side jobs every once in a while. It's surprisingly great for people who are looking for full-time positions.
This past week I worked at a tech company uploading Q&As and articles to their website. About an hour or two into my shift, I was asked by my supervisor if I wanted to come back for the rest of the week, and by the end of the shift she was asking what my plans were for the entire month. I was unable to accept the position because I was going back to school, but I found out that the two people who had been working next to me had started on Wonolo as well. They were brought on full time after the supervisor saw potential in them.
While this is not necessarily the case for all companies who find daily employees on Wonolo, some companies do like the idea of being able to hire you on a trial basis to see how well you handle your tasks. In this way you aren't being judged as a faceless resume, but you're able to prove yourself and your work ethic in order to get a full time position.
While Wonolo isn't for everyone, it has been a great side income for me this winter break and I look forward to seeing the ways that their growth and expansion offers up new opportunities for its workers. There's a shift in the ways that people are being employed nowadays and Wonolo is on the cutting edge of it.
