A little tangent on something amazing

In this day and age, the world is a place full of intriguing new developments ranging from the American 2016 election's candidates to recent activity in North Korea, and very few of them are very positive. With all of this going on, you can find anger, hate or distrust brewing in almost every event and organization that rears its head on the news or social media. It is in this mess of things that I have come to appreciate my own personal means of escaping all of this negativity all the more: fiction.

In itself, fiction is an imaginary story that is written out from a perspective that the writer chooses. This type of literature includes everything from children's books like Dr. Suess books to horror books or adult novels. Some fiction is understandably banned from many libraries for falling into the latter of those categories, but most libraries will stock and house a good deal of these windows to other worlds, allowing those who would like to the ability to check out books and go to a new world for awhile as a new person. Like a vacation, but you can carry it around and it doesn't cost you a fortune to go.

Reading is the only real chore, and even then it's only problematic to some people since it takes a while and some need to put more effort into it than others, but with the right books, it becomes so worth it. All it takes is one good book to get someone hooked for a whole series, whether that series takes them to the wizarding world, Narnia or some other fantastic place.

Some places may wow you, some might make you feel a new range of emotions, and some may even kill you, but each is a fresh take on a new life in a novel world. Just the thought of a library lacking a collection of these keys to the wondrous worlds of fiction makes me feel so bad for those dependent on such a library. Everyone should be able to enjoy the beauty of fiction, regardless of whether or not it presents a true world or story, and I am certain that any fellow bookworm reading this can attest to that.

If this seems more like a rant than anything else, it's only because I had the thought that some people either haven't discovered the amazing worlds behind the covers of a book or they choose not to, and while I'd always known that, the thought makes me incredibly sad for those people who may never know just how amazing it can be. So I thought I'd make a quick little piece out of appreciation for fiction, because it doesn't get the props it should nowadays. If you don't read, there's no pressure, but I want you to know how much you're missing out. If you do read, then you know just what I'm talking about.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
