While I am not an avid superhero fan, or lover of actions films, I really enjoyed Wonder Woman. I went for the chance to support a woman superhero and director, and was not disappointed.
This film really had some great "girl power." Living on an isolated island her entire life, Diana had no concept of the sexism surrounding Western society. Often times when she did something jaw-droppingly fantastic and heroic it was after being told she was in the way as a woman. This just didn't make sense to her, and was done brilliantly.
There was just a bit of romance, that was nice and didn't take over the plot. There were a few awkward and flirtatious innuendos that stopped just before they were too much.
It's worth noting that Wonder Woman is canonically bisexual in the DC universe, though this wasn't addressed in the film. Adding this bit of representation is something I'm hoping for, however, in future Wonder Woman films.
The film did a fantastic job of giving the audience little reveals along the way. Wonder Woman isn't seen in the iconic and totally awesome red and blue armor until an important battle scene. While her "destiny" was a bit predictable, it was revealed nicely as well.
Gal Gadot as Diana was gorgeous. She was heroic, strong, and not hyper-sexualized without having to give up showing some skin altogether. I was extremely impressed with this balance, and I know we have director Patty Jenkins to thank for taking away the male gaze. During the final battle Wonder Woman's leg even realistically jiggled from the impact of a landing.
There was fantastic storytelling on behalf of the villain, and how he didn't cause war in the way that Wonder Woman understood him to. I loved this twist, and how after humanity is painted in such an awful light, Diana still steps up as our hero.
Granted, as someone who has barely seen any DC or Marvel movies, I don't know if the things I liked about the film are notable, or are standard in for superhero films. For me, the film was a bit long. However, I didn't lose interest or have too much trouble following the plot as I fear when attending superhero movies.
If you are like me, and not a superhero person, but want to go for feminist reasons you won't be disappointed. As far as I can tell, superhero enthusiasts won't be disappointed either.
