The 2016 Olympic Women's Gymnastics team has finally been announced. After very close trials these 5 ladies will be going to Rio.
1. Simone Biles
Simone is only 19 and came in first during the Olympic Trials. This came as absolutely no surprise as Simone has been ruling the sport since the last summer Olympics. Simone had an amazing uneven bar routine the second night of trials getting a deduction of only 0.1 on her dismount. She is currently a three-time world all-around champion, four-time all around US National champion and now she will be continuing on to the Olympics.
2. Gaby Douglas
Gaby is the reigning Olympic champion for Women's Gymnastics, she is the first African American to win gold in the individual all-around. Gaby is entering her second Olympics at the young age of 20. After a last minute coaching change and falling off the beam both nights of the trials it was questionable whether the selection committee was going to bring Gaby back for a second Olympics. She has made it and is grateful the committee saw how she could contribute to the team on the uneven bars.
3. Laurie Hernandez
Laurie is only 16 years old and only entered her senior career at the start of 2016. Throughout the trials she always had a smile on her face and lit up the room. Finishing second just 2.1 points behind Simone, Laurie is new on the scene and is very quickly a rising star, she will now be entering her first Olympic games.
4. Madison Kocian
Madison is 19 years old and the 2015 world champion on the uneven bars. She finished eighth during the Olympic trials so it may have been surprising to see her get a spot, although it was well deserved. This spot came down to a battle between Madison and Ashton Locklear, with Madison showing more promise all around and not just on the uneven bars.
5. Aly Raisman
Aly is 22 years old and another returning member from the Fierce Five of 2012. Aly won gold on floor in the 2012 Olympics, came in fourth all-around and the team won gold. While she was overshadowed by Gaby's amazing performance in 2012 Aly was an amazing member of the team and will bring so much to the 2016 team. Raisman and Douglas are the first two to make back to back games since 2000. Aly is still on an upward trend which will help the team and allow her to place individually.
The three alternates for the 2016 games are Ashton Locklear of 18, Ragan Smith of 15 and MyKayla Skinner of 19.
