Women Steal the Spotlight of the Games

Everyone has big dreams, not just Phelps.

We are a week into the 31st Olympiad and it is obvious that the women are stealing the show. Not taking anything from Michael Phelps, but the women from multiple countries have been rocking and rolling, breaking records, and defying all odds.

On the American side alone, besides Katie Ledecky had you known the names of Maya Dirado, Simone Biles, Simone Manuel, or Lily King? Katie Ledecky was destined to win multiple events because the star is on a whole other level compared to the rest of the middle distance freestyle pack, but as humans we love competition. With competition comes the story of underdogs. Women are consistently the underdogs to men especially when it comes to athletics, but some of the best moments of these Olympics have been achieved by women.

Katie Ledecky won all of her individual events included the 200 meters freestyle. If you aren't a swimmer it's hard to understand that the 200, 400, and 800 freestyle events are VERY different and are never won by the same person. But apparently, as Rowdy Gaines, NBC announcer, likes to say, she's the next Michael Phelps. No, she's not. She's her own person with unbelievable abilities. She's the first Katie Ledecky.

A shocked Simone Manuel cried as she looked at the scoreboard and saw that she not only broke an Olympic record in the 100-meter freestyle, but she had also beat the Campbell sisters who both have the fastest times ever swum in that event. Is there a better underdog story? That's why we watch the Olympics to be able to see not only the stars shine, but for the underdogs to achieve their dreams that they never thought possible.

I watch the Olympics for moments like this. Moments where both the stars and underdogs have a chance to shine to the world. The moments that pictures can't even capture perfectly. The moments these athletes wait their whole life for. In conclusion, I would appreciate it if the commentators would give the athletes the credit they deserve. No one should be compared to anyone else. All of these achievements are incredible. Not one of those gold medals should be overlooked or dismissed. Michael Phelps gold medal is no different than Simone Manuel's. Except we saw the medal ceremony for every one of Phelps' medal, but we didn't see Simone Manuel cry tears of joy for hers.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
