For the 2016 Rio Olympics Team USA is made up of more women than men. That's incredible. But why is it that women are still being treated different?
Kim Rhode. Rhode has medaled in six straight Olympic Games. With her bronze medal in this year's game she tied the record. A record six straight Olympic Games. How many people have heard of Kim Rhode? Why isn't her event one everyone should watch like Michael Phelp's swimming? It's because her event involves guns. She shoots guns, which in today's society, is frowned upon.
Gabby Douglas. Douglas competed and medaled in her second Olympics. Why is this 20 year old getting shot down and basically bullied? Where does it say that when the National Anthem is played you MUST put your hand on your heart? As a former high school basketball player my team and I always locked hands and faced the flag. No one ever told us we weren't patriotic. Returning Olympic medalists have a goal....to medal again. To medal again these athletes must do whatever it takes to be "in the zone". That may include a straight face. Having a "game face" is not unpatriotic.
Those are just two prime examples of women being treated differently in the Olympics. So I ask you, during the next Olympic Games (Korea 2018) find an event you normally wouldn't watch and watch it, or pick out an athlete you've never heard of and follow them throughout the games. You may be surprised.
