When I took to Facebook in search of stories from my friends and coworkers to include in this article, I was overwhelmed by the number of cruel, horrible, and downright disgusting accounts I heard from my peers—both women and men.
What was more surprising was the number of people who played off these circumstances as "normal," and "just part of the industry."
So many servers in the food and beverage industry take perverted comments, physical assault, and dehumanizing disrespect as part of their everyday jobs. It's become so normalized because it's happening to everyone. And let me just say, that's not okay.
Here are just a few of the worst things some of my fellow servers have had to go through.
So here's a friendly reminder that servers are people too. No one has any right to degrade them, insult them, or assault them. Ever. And if you're one of the people who think you can talk to your server like dirt, I will find you and I will kill you.
