It recently was brought to my attention as I was walking home one night, probably sometime after midnight, that the only people who walk alone at night are males. Females apparently only travel in large packs when walking at night is what I have witnessed. This is very interesting to me because I've literally walked home alone for months, ever since I moved to the city and didn't think a thing of it until I just noticed one day that I never see any women crossing my path. Why is this?
And to clarify, I don't make a habit of roaming the streets at night but if I am out and if it's less than a mile from my apartment, I typically will walk home. I never really thought that to be odd and maybe since I'm not used to living right downtown in a city, I am unaware of the "dangers" of walking alone in a city after dark. Yes, I know it's not 100% safe, but what is unless you live in a bubble? But the fact that I don't think I have ever seen another female walking alone at night is a little strange to me. I might be only 100 lbs and 5'5" but I like to think I can hold my own. And while I am aware of possible dangers, I wouldn't allow those to stop me from walking home. I'm curious as to what other females think about this because it's definitely become something that I recently take note of anytime that I am walking after dark.
Is walking alone really that dangerous? Or is it just more of social taboo for a female to walk the streets alone? I might just be out of touch, but I can think of a lot more dangerous things that people do and worse situations that they put themselves in as opposed to walking home alone at night. If I am walking alone, I will pass all sorts of people in my travels. I avoid eye contact, walk fairly fast (but not too fast) and don't hold a "friendly" look on my face. I've never had any real issues before other than the typical "cat calls" and people asking for money.
I'd love to hear some opinions, but in the meantime I am going to keep doing what I do.
