The Wage Gap among women and men is astronomical. And frankly, quite sad. It's 2018 and women are still earning exponentially less than a man in a similar position. Especially those in the film industry.
For example, remember back in 2017 when Natalie Portman claimed that her co-star Ashton Kutcher was paid 3 times more than she was.
What even is that?! Both well-established actors in the business for YEARS, yet because she is a female, she gets a smaller paycheck?
We certainly don't want history repeating itself and we need to be the change we want to see. Then again, we are living in a world now where men are somehow easily promoted, and women have to work twice as hard, raise a family, and juggle everyday responsibilities and it's that much harder to speak up and actually be heard, much less compensated equally.
So, the purpose of creating a brighter future is to not repeat our past mistakes.Whether it's major celebrities at awards shows, talk shows, or your neighbor protesting with a picket sign; this issue has been in the headlines for quite some time now and it will continue to be until action is taken and enough awareness is raised.
We face many diverse explanations for the ongoing gender pay gap: women work part-time; they take career breaks for family commitments; their labor is low-skilled; they work in the more compassionate professions; they are under-represented in science and engineering. However, these commonly mentioned justifications simulate that pay is set according to the value of the work done. Whether it's men making more than the women, or vice versa; it's a very delicate subject that deserves to have a light shined on the matter and talked about more frequently.
This topic is commonly discussed and, in every way, can affect every person we know or even personally. Being able to see a difference in wages shouldn't even be something we should still be discussing today; but unfortunately, it remains one of the biggest controversies we as a society face.
