The Wombats will be releasing their fourth studio album in February 2018 and the first single from the new record just dropped this week, "Lemon To A Knife Fight." Frontman Matthew Murphy has said he wants the band's latest record to be a bit more laid back than 2015's Glitterbug.
As a longtime fan of The Wombats, "Lemon to a Knife Fight" seems like it picks up where Glitterbug left off in a way that shows the band members have grown up a bit. The indie rockers have always been known for putting a fun spin on the dramatic side of relationships in young adulthood, and this certainly spoke to me in my early 20s when I was looking to move on, or at least expand my tastes, from high school emo. Rather than partying hard, this album will focus on trying to be an adult and failing, a feeling many of us millennials can relate to.
Murphy has said the new single is about a fight he had with his wife while driving on Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles. Like much of Glitterbug, I definitely get the LA vibes from this song, and the upcoming album is aptly titled Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life.
The Wombats will be touring with the Pixies and Weezer next summer and the forthcoming record is available for preorder.
