The Wombats are back with a new album, Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life. The Liverpool band has been quietly making music for a decade, but in the past few years, they have been rightfully attracting more attention, especially with their previous album, Glitterbug.
I always connected with The Wombats because of their angsty indie disco tunes about young adulthood. Dating, depression, partying - this band was the soundtrack to the end of my college days and beginning of my twenties.
Their music has evolved at the same time and rate that I have, so it's fitting that this new album is more about the early years of marriage rather than drunken nights. For the past few years, Matthew Murphy, the lead singer of The Wombats, has lived in Los Angeles, and the city has definitely dripped into the band's sound over the past couple albums.
The lead single, "Lemon to a Knife Fight" was a little bland, but still had that edge of angst The Wombats are known for. Just look at the title of the album if you need proof of angst. However, I actually think the followup single, "Turn," is a more solid output with the quirky lyrics fans have come to expect from the band.
I've come across some comments online that claim Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life is a boring record and The Wombats have lost something vital by gaining maturity, but I disagree. I think the lyrical complexity is still there, and retains what makes the band unique. This may be The Wombats' most cohesive album to date, and it certainly is a step away from the bright disco melodies of Glitterbug. But I think you can still tell they are siblings. I would probably describe this as new sound lite.
