President Donald Trump is the subject of much criticism. This criticism can often be justified due to his radically conservative viewpoints and insulting remarks regarding women, the LGBTQ community, and immigrants. However, I find Mike Pence, the new Vice President, a much more threatening and menacing figure. Though Trump is bad, Pence is worse. His stance on the most controversial topics truly does remind me of the stuff of history textbooks, and I cannot be more disappointed in America’s second in command.
I would specifically like to discuss the topic of women. As a young woman in 2017, I have thus far been privileged to experience one of the greatest Women’s Rights movements since the 1920s. I have had the opportunity, like few before me, to look forward to the idea of equal pay, equal rights, and, most importantly, equal respect. The thought of someone trying to take that away from me and the women around me is unbearable, to say the least.
Mike Pence does not believe in condoms. Mike Pence does not believe in women in the military. Mike Pence does not believe in working mothers. Mike Pence does not believe that rape is justifiable for abortion. Mike Pence does not believe in equal pay. Mike Pence does not believe in free birth control.
Mike Pence does believe that he owns my uterus. Mike Pence does believe that I and the women around me are inferior. Mike Pence does believe that women should be seen and not heard. Mike Pence does believe that women are too weak to be in the military. Mike Pence does believe that women should stay home, take care of the kids, and make dinner rather than make a career or actually be somebody important. Mike Pence does believe that this is the early 1900s and women are subordinate.
You can be a republican or you can be a democrat, you can be conservative or you can be liberal, you can be male or you can be female, but you cannot deny the fact that his views are twisted and fundamentally immoral.
As a woman, I, with all due respect for Mike Pence, would like to tell him one thing: if you take away my basic human rights or try and tell me that I am any less of a person because I have a vagina, there are millions of people all over the world that will fight until you no longer have the power to tell us that we don’t matter.
