Why I Don't Know What I'd Do Without My "Happy Place"

If Martin Luther King didn't dream of his happy place, we wouldn't be where we are today.

Everyone has a “happy place.” It’s a warm and fuzzy place you concoct in your mind that helps you feel good. Whenever I’m stressed, anxious, or worried I think about my personal happy place. It allows me to take a deep breath and understand that everything is going to be okay.

My happy place may sound strange but when I envision myself in it, I feel at peace. My happy place is laying in a comfy king-sized bed enveloped my dozens of fluffy pillows. The room is cold but I feel warm because I’m under my thick, fuzzy blanket. I’m slowly sipping on a bowl of Panera’s steamy chicken noodle soup with my headphones plugged in my ears blasting my “Sleep” playlist, which consists of powerful show tune ballads. Then all of a sudden a cute male (typically Ryan Gosling) is holding my non-soup eating hand and slowly caressing the top of it with his thumb, making me swoon. I feel warm, relaxed, and loved. What more could a girl ask for?

However, happy places don’t last for long. Once I finish my soup, I snap out of my brief daydream and enter reality once again. I’m either in the midst of a long paper I have to write that’s due the next day, about to embark on a difficult and tiring workout, or simply can’t make the decision on whether or not to wait for the chicken to cook at the dining hall. Either way, I’m distraught and need a motivational boost in my mind that will help me cope.

Do you have a “happy place”? A place you can dream about and escape there for a while. A place that encompasses all of your obscure wants and desires. A place that can make you feel happy on those days where “you just can’t win.”

I think everyone should have a happy place. Everyone should occasionally daydream in class about being somewhere that’s a creative mental invention of theirs. People may think this is terrible advice to give, but next time your teacher is making no sense in class, go to your happy place. Daydream about that comfy bed you love so passionately. Think about that boy caressing your hand lightly, making you feel adored and cherished. Think about that bowl of soup that warms up your insides and makes you feel at ease. Be creative and think because your mind is what helps you get through it. Your mind is your happy place, so make it what you want it to be.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
