I Wish I Had It

A chronicle of the struggles of being a theater nerd who's not a theater major.

I Wish I Had It

For those of us who were theater nerds in high school but then had to pick a major other than this of ours passion in college, the struggle of being a non-theater major theater person is very real. If you relate to this statement, you will probably feel for most, if not all, of the following:

1. You constantly listen to show tunes, and people ask you if you're a theater major, and you tell them no, then they look confused.

2. When meeting theater majors, you have to pretend like you don't know who they are even though you definitely recognize them from that show you saw last fall.

3. You feel flattered when your friends who are theater majors ask you for advice on an audition piece.

4. You know there's a group of people who could be "your people," but you'll never actually be one of them because you're not a major.

5. It gets awkward when you have ridiculous talent crushes on people, but they're only fellow students.

6. You often question your life choices every time you see a show because you wonder, "What if?"

7. You've come to the terrible realization that you'll never be as good as them, or at least brave enough to try to be.

8. You constantly wish there was a major for being a Broadway star's BFF/Susan Blackwell or Paul Wontorek's job.

9. You memorize countless facts about shows and stars and keep up with all of the latest theater news to compensate for the fact that you're not a major.

10. You don't understand when you know about a show that one of your theater major friends doesn't.

11. When you first got to college, you didn't know what to do with all of your spare time because you would have always been at rehearsals in high school.

12. You're still not quite sure what to do with your spare time, so you find yourself watching a lot of Broadway.com vlogs or reruns of The Tonys.

13. You force your pet to be the audience for your one-man show since you don't get to perform on stage anymore.

14. Your favorite time of the day is when you're driving home in your car, and you blast some show tunes and belt as loudly as your heart desires.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
