I graduated high school in 2009, while all of my friends were listening to T.I. and the Black Eyed Peas, I would play along, but when I got home I would blast Led Zeppelin. All of the girls were finding new shades of eye shadow and nail polish, while I could have cared less about that stuff, all I needed was my long straight hair, Corduroys, and a band shirt. Even now, my favorite era is still the 70's. I always fantasized about being at Woodstock, being natural and free, swaying with the music. I don't think I'll ever be able to shake my fascination with the decade's music and culture.
My generation 'the Millennials' would say they love living in this day and age (aside from being called the lazy generation, climate change, Clinton/Trump, tough job market) okay maybe most would say they don't love it. Take away those points I just made, and we're left with social media, iPhone attached at the hip, movie sequels, countless TV shows, and drumroll…horrible music. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the beginning of Industrialism, we've been progressing and progressing. Today sort of feels like a stagnant point, where we need to take a step back, stop trying to progress, and just live simply.
I fantasize about the '70s because it seemed like a time of simple pleasures. People were content to smoke a doobie and hang out in the park. But most of all, the music, which rode on the coattails of the '60s with the Doors, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. With the '70s came Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Styx, lots of soul music, disco, Carol King, the Eagles, southern rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd, the list goes on. There was also the beginning of punk with David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and the Ramones. And you had the whole Studio 54 crowd with Andy Warhol, engaging in art and free love.
The fashion was simplistic, yet awesome. Lots of high-waisted jeans, mod patterns, long skirts, high socks, bell bottoms, it was just cool okay!
The TV then had fewer options and channels, but they were all good options like the Brady Bunch and Scooby Doo. Movies really became great in the '70s too. You've got the Godfather, Jaws, The Exorcist, Taxi, A Clockwork Orange, Star Wars, Deliverance, Saturday Night Fever, Halloween, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and Dirty Harry.
Need I say more? If I could be a young adult in any generation, it would be then.
Now you may have your own favorite generation, maybe the 50's or 80's. Drop me a line and let me know!
