I absolutely love the idea of Rube Goldberg machines. Just the way that so many intricate parts all move together to make a bunch of useless junk into a piece of moving art is enough to wow the mind.
My interest in these machines is what led me to Wintergatan.
This avant-garde music group from Goteberg, Sweden wowed me with their video for 'Marble Machine.' Not only did this band manage to put together a massive musical machine from plywood and Legos, they designed it so that it could play a full song just by cranking a lever.
Anybody who can combine music and aesthetics like that automatically earns my respect and for good cause.
And the cool thing is, they currently have a YouTube series where they're redesigning the machine to be even better!
Called the Marble Machine X, this thing is going to be able to play faster and cleaner, while still keeping the cool handmade feel of the original machine.
While the Rube Goldberg aspect of the band is really awesome, their music is nothing to scoff at either.
Their general style combines unconventional instruments like melodica and vibraphone with the bizarre and creative sounds of electronica to create just the happiest little tunes you've ever listened to.
My personal favorite song of theirs is 'StarMachine2000.' It's a long one, but the way they use theme and variation with just the most head-bopping melody creates an auditory experience, unlike anything you'll find in the mainstream.
I also highly recommend listening to 'Sommarfågel' and 'Biking is Better.'
Really the only complaint I could possibly have about this band is that I'll never get to see them live. I've seen clips of their live shows, and they just get so into everything they do.
They absolutely just love making music, and their passion shows through their songs and handiwork. It's fascinating, wholesome, and just some of the greatest music you'll ever listen to.
