For some people, the fall and winter seasons are a delightful change. It's a time to put on our gloves, boots, and scarves, and embrace the winter wonderland. But for others, it is energy draining and an absolute misery. It robs us of our precious warmth, sun, and time we'd otherwise be spending with sunscreen on our noses and our toes in the sand.
If you find that you experience depression-like symptoms during these colder months, you might be experiencing seasonal depression.
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression individuals experience that for most people, begins around the fall season when temperatures begin to drop. Symptoms of the disorder can be mild but become more severe over time.
Symptoms may include:
- Feeling depressed almost all day, every day
- Losing interest in activities
- Trouble sleeping
- Increased moodiness or irritability
- Changes in weight or appetite
- Feelings of hopelessness
- Increased fatigue and low energy
The symptoms described are not a complete list of those experienced by people with SAD, and more information can be found at https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sea....
It's absolutely normal to have days where you may feel depressed, sluggish, and moody, however these symptoms can sometimes be a manifestation of a deeper problem. If you're experiencing symptoms and you feel it is a greater issue, consult with your doctor.
Many people are not aware that seasonal depression exists, and assume it is merely a case of the winter blues. Share with your friends and family and make sure your loved ones are aware of the disorder so that they may take action if and when it is appropriate.
