Winter Break: Expectations vs Reality

Not everything seems to go as planned.

As winter break begins to come to a close, we realize how fast 6 weeks really go. Everyone has their ideas of how they want the break to go, but it never seems to go as expected.

Expectation: You'll see your old friends most days if not every day.

You haven't seen your old friends in months and you miss them to pieces. In the multiple group chats your in and how many plans you've made, you'll basically be living with your friends over break. It'll be great!

Reality: You see you friends 3 times at most.

Everyone has plans. It's life. Some friends are away with their family, some work every day, and some just bail. It happens. It takes an effort to actually meet up with friends.

Expectation: You'll be busy every day.

Source: Giphy

You have plans lined up, places you want to go, people you want to see, you'll be picking up a few shifts at work; you're just going to get so much done! You're going to have no time to yourself.

Reality: You're bored out of your mind.

Your friends are busy, you don't really want to work, and Super Mario Run came out so you're playing that nonstop. You miss living with your friends at school and making an even out of just going to the dining hall to get food. College is so much fun and you miss it.

OR

Expectation: You'll have all the time in the world.

This break is yours. You have absolutely nothing to do. You don't have plans, but you'll make them. You'll spend most of the time recuperating after a busy semester.

Reality: You're working every day.

If you're anything like me, then when you're not picking up shifts at work, you're on campus giving tours or working with the radio station. You also have to update your resumé and apply for internships, and you end up having to "pencil someone in" whenever you want to make plans with someone.

Expectation: You'll be relaxed.

Source: Giphy

You'll marathon Netflix, have a few of your closest friends over, and just chill in your college sweats. You're happy as a clam just doing nothing, and you've waited months to do so.

Reality: You have no time to yourself.

Source: Giphy

You're back under your parents' roof, so you always have people running around. Alone time becomes a myth. Between working and seeing family and meeting friends, you're just running around like crazy.

Expectation: You'll be well-rested.

Source: Giphy

All you plan to do is catch up on your sleep. You've learned to appreciate sleep, and since the last month of the semester was spent sleep-free, this is your time to make up for that.

Reality: You have college jet lag.

Source: Giphy

You're so used to going to bed at 2 am and waking up at 2 pm. Now that you're back home, you have people running around in the morning making sure you wake up at the same time as a normal human being. There's no such thing as sleeping in.

Expectation: You'll be super productive.

Source: Giphy

You have so much time that you're going to fill with work. Resumés, applications, jobs, and creating a better "you". You're going to own this break!

Reality: "I mean, the internet, sooo..."

Source: Giphy

Netflix, YouTube, Twitter, Snapchat. Need I say more?

Winter break has gone by fast, and while most people begin to go back, us Hofstra students still have 2 weeks left. We have 2 more weeks to fill with as much or as little productivity as we care.

Dear High School Friend Group,

My sweet angels, where would I be without you guys. We all grew up together because we either met in middle school or high school and watched each other grow up and get "old." We got to go to prom together and then graduate together. Then watched each other as we continued our lives in college, joining sororities and meeting people who will impact our lives forever. It all has happened so fast.

Oh college, we can’t live with you, but we can’t live without you. It’s a love/hate relationship, really. College is an experience that no one can ever prepare you for, and maybe that’s a good thing. You never really expect any of the things that college encompasses until you are there. College is fun, but don’t have too much fun. C’s get degrees, but they don’t get you into graduate school.

Blair Waldorf

The "Gossip Girl" series may be over, but Blair Waldorf's iconic character lives in our hearts forever. Blair was the queen of the Upper East Side, and a character you either loved or hated. She taught us everything we needed to know about life, love and of course, how to score a Chuck Bass. So the next time you feel a bit lost and are in need of guidance, look no further than to the Queen B herself.

As I spend my Sunday avoiding my homework and other adult responsibilities, I realized that I've watched this series over and over about a million times. Sadly, there isn't a Blair quote I don't know, so I came up with a list of a few favorites. You know you love her...xoxo

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.
