Winter Birthdays

The perks and the down sides

Having a winter birthday is both a blessing and a curse. They are exciting and fun, just like every other birthday, but there are some down sides to having a birthday when it is 10 degrees outside.

1. You always have to worry about the weather

It could be two days before your birthday and you and your friends are beyond excited to do something on your special day. But then, you see on the forecast and there's a chance of snow. Now, of course you don't want to let anything get in the way of your awesome plans, but that chance of snow turns into a foot of snow within 10 hours. Suddenly, those awesome plans you had turned into a night snowed in with your annoying little brother and a gallon of ice cream.

2. Your birthday may fall on a day during winter break

Who doesn't love having a birthday when there's no school?! If you're like me, your birthday falls on a day where there isn't school, which means you have more time to sleep, spend time with your family and hang out with your friends! You won't have the stress of worrying about upcoming assignments or going to bed too late on a school night because you wanted to make the best of your birthday. You can enjoy your birthday to the fullest!

3. There are a limited amount of activities you can do

Unfortunately, winter birthdays fall around the time of cold weather, which means doing fun things can be difficult. Most ideas you come up with have to be indoors! You can't spend a day at the beach or plan a pool party; everything is limited because of how cold it is.

4. The activities you do brainstorm are fun!

Sure, we can't go to the beach or go swimming but we can go ice skating, spend the night with your friends watching movies and drinking hot cocoa or bake! There are limitations, but we have learned how to work around them and make the best of our birthday.

5. You always get asked if your birthday presents get combined with your Christmas presents

For me, at least, my birthday presents stay separated from my Christmas presents. I like to think of it as if my birthday were in the spring or summer. You get presents for your birthday and then you get presents for the holiday. The question happens all the time when someone asks when your birthday is, but you easily get used to it and learn to respond with the same answer every time.

6. There are more presents in a smaller amount of time

Because your birthday is so close to the holidays, you will receive so many more presents in a smaller time frame. Who doesn't love a lot of presents? Well, it could end up being disappointing in the end because that means you have to wait an entire year for the next round of presents.

6. There's always so much going on around your birthday

Having a birthday in the winter time means your birthday is around the holiday season. It could be Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years Eve or even Valentine's day. It's a common time for the holidays and everyone is so busy with family events. It may be more difficult to plan fun things with your close friends because it is a popular time for families and friends to get together after not seeing each other for a while.

7. Dressing nice is harder because you have to bundle up in so many layers of clothing

If you're going out to dinner with some friends, you're going to want to dress nicer than usual. However, when it's winter, that means it's cold which leads to wearing extra layers of clothing. This can sometimes end up ruining that cute outfit you had planned out, but sometimes, you can make anything look cute.

Winter birthdays have so many up sides, but there are also reasons why winter birthdays can be a little less exciting.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
