After the Super Bowl ends each year, a sad aura begins to fill millions of homes across the country. The thought of several weeks without NFL Sunday is a truly terrifying thought. In the midst of recovering from the NFL-less weeks, we have the off-season festivities to keep us entertained.
The highlight of the offseason is obviously the draft every April, but until the draft rolls around, free agency is the next best thing. As we have seen in years past, a quality free agency acquisition can do wonders for teams. Darrelle Revis making a pitstop in New England and helping them to win a ring, Peyton Manning ending his impressive career in Denver with the Broncos are just two recent examples of teams reaping the benefits of free agency.
A few days into this year’s free agency period and some interesting moves have been made. Here are the teams who have benefited the most from free agency thus far.
New York Giants
Players added: Olivier Vernon(DE), Janoris Jenkins(CB), Damon Harrison(DT), Keenan Robinson(ILB)
The Giants are an interesting team. While watching them it seems as if they are somewhat competitive in most of their games and their struggles aren't that evident. I suppose that's the benefit of having a polarizing figure such as Odell Beckham suiting up each week. Their offense, led by Beckham and Eli Manning always seem to put up points and make their games somewhat interesting. While their offense is impressive, their defense leaves much to be desired.
The Giants allowed a league-worst 420 yards per game and also allowed their opponents to put up an embarrassing 27.6 points per game. The signings of Olivier Vernon and Damon Harrison add talent to a struggling defensive line that is a shell of its once elite self. Keenan Robinson gives the Giants a younger, talented option at the middle linebacker spot as Jon Beason is aging (32) and is a free agent this offseason. Janoris Jenkins might be their most important signing to this point. Jenkins provides talent to a secondary that has been downright dreadful. Jenkins isn't a lockdown corner by any means but is a consistent performer who possesses great athleticism to match with the talented receivers in the NFC East.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Players added: Malik Jackson (DE), Tashaun Gipson(FS), Chris Ivory(RB), Mackenzy Bernadeau(C)
The Jaguars have certainly had their struggles over the past few seasons. Last season was a season that displayed something that Jaguars fan haven't seen in a long time: hope. With the young core of Blake Bortles, Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns and TJ Yeldon, the Jaguars offense certainly looks poised to be a force in the coming seasons. The issue, as it's been for many years, was their defense. Their defense was atrocious all year, as they ranked in the bottom third of the league in many categories, except for sacks where they were recorded a subpar 36 sacks, which placed them 20th out of 32 teams.
Today's NFL is a pass-oriented league, which calls for good secondary play and an even better pass rush, just look at this year's Denver Broncos who excelled in both. The Jags are lacking in both these areas and the signings of Tashaun Gipson and Malik Jackson bring elite talent to both the secondary and the defensive line. Gipson and Jackson both have played the entirety of their careers in the AFC so they will be familar with many of the opponents they will come across.
The addition of Chris Ivory helps to provide run support for TJ Yeldon, who seemed very frustrated at times when he was being forced to run into walls of 5-6 players in the box. Ivory's physicality and bruising running ability will give Yeldon some much-needed support and will help the Jaguars in the red zone as well. Bringing in Mackenzy Bernadeau from the NFC champion Carolina Panthers gives the Jags experience on their inconsistent offensive line and also gives them versatility as Bernadeau has the ability to line in multiple spots on the line.
Oakland Raiders
Players added: Sean Smith(CB), Bruce Irvin(OLB), Kelechi Osemele(LT)
The Oakland Raiders were an intriguing team on the rise. The young offensive trio of Derek Carr, Latavious Murray, and Amari Cooper along with Michael Crabtree have helped to make the Raiders a formidable offensive team instead of the laughing stock they have been since the Rich Gannon days. The Raiders defense struggled heavily at times last season and Carr and the offense were tasked with keeping the offense in the game too frequently last season.
The Raiders defense had it's few bright spots however, such as legendary defensive back Charles Woodson. Replacing Woodson will be no easy task, but the signing of talented corner Sean Smith is a great move. Smith brings a veteran presence to a young team and was part of a winning culture over in Kansas City. Smith should bring good habits to the younger members of the secondary.
Bruce Irvin has been a key contributor for the lauded "Legion of Boom" for the past few years and brings rare versatility to the Raiders' defense with his ability to rush off the edge and also play with a hand in the dirt.
Signing Kelechi Osemele was also a great move to provide more protection for franchise QB Derek Carr. Osemele might have been the only bright spot to a horrible Ravens offense last season that was decimated with injuries. Osemele is definitely an upgrade over the older players at Osemele's position, Donald Penn and Khalif Barnes, who are 32 and 33 respectively.
Houston Texans
Players added: Brock Osweiler (QB), Jeff Allen(G), Lamar Miller(RB), Tony Bergstrom(C)
The Texans may have finally gotten the answer to their prayers. After struggling to find a competent Quarterback since the franchise's inaugural season in 2002, the Texans may have finally found a potential suitor in Brock Osweiler.
Osweiler certainly looked like a solid, and at times pretty good, Quarterback in his few games played in relief of Peyton Manning last season. While the Broncos provided Osweiler with incredible support from a historically good defense, the Texans have a talented defense, led by JJ Watt, that should do a good job supporting Osweiler.
The Texans also added Lamar Miller, the electric back from Miami. Miller brings 3-down ability and should help Osweiler transition smoothly in Houston.
Adding Jeff Allen and Tony Bergstrom gives the Texans depth and added talent on the O-line and should help protect Osweiler and provide running lanes for Lamar Miller.
