If you’re anything like me, during the summertime any frozen treat is such a temptation! That being said, they always tend to be so full of sugar, processed ingredients and lots of calories. However, one company, Wink Frozen Desserts, is trying to change that and create an allergy-free, low calorie frozen treat.
Wink Frozen Desserts, as featured on the hit T.V. show, Shark Tank, are vegan, soy free, gluten free, nut free, egg free, and dairy free. A majority of their pints are 100 calories, with a few of the flavors being 240. Can you imagine a whole pint for just 100 calories? As I am often one to enjoy ice cream and wanted a healthy alternative, I went ahead and did a taste test!
First off, I want to bring to attention the fact that Wink is labeled as a frozen dessert, not an ice cream. If you go into the taste expecting ice cream there is a high chance you will be let down as Wink doesn’t necessarily provide the creamy taste ice cream does. One of Wink’s main ingredients is pure pea protein powder, thus sometimes creating a slight protein taste that I was not too keen on. My friend and I tried a bite of each flavor, but overall nothing had a “wow” factor for us. My mom, who has an all-natural, sugar-free diet found some of the flavors enjoyable, but she was not blown away either.
Although I am not sure I would buy Wink products again, I will say that it is definitely a product to help ween you off your summer ice cream addiction. My friend and I decided to do a taste test on all the flavors and rank them for you all.
First off, we relatively enjoyed Choco-mint, Strawberry Cheesecake, Iced Latte, and Vanilla bean. Iced Latte was by far our favorite, reminding me of a frozen Starbucks drink. For my friends with a sweet tooth, I would definitely recommend getting the Iced Latte flavor a little melted and throwing in a blender with some extra sugar to make a nice refreshing drink!
As for the other flavors, we were not too crazy about them. The consistency and the idea of the peanut butter and jelly flavor creeped us out as it has actual jelly in the pint, creating a weird consistency. Next, although we were initially excited about Cake Batter, we found the taste to be chalky and not appealing. The same was true for both Cinnamon Bun and Cocoa-dough. Lastly, we ranked Black Cherry Cacao Nib pretty far down on the list as the ice was not bad; however, the nibs added into the product were not appetizing and with that being the highest caloric pint at 300 calories, we decided it was just not worth it.
Overall, I probably would not buy Wink products again. I think I would prefer to snack on an apple or make a home-made fruit sorbet; however, for ice cream addicts trying to get healthy, Wink just may be the product for you!
