As the weather warms up, I have started to be able to do one of my favorite things again: drive with the windows down. When I started doing this, I remembered some old playlists I used to love singing along to last spring and summer. I've enjoyed listening to them and re-finding old favorites. Here are my suggestions for songs to listen to as you cruise through town, soaking up the sunlight.
1. "Worldshaker" by The Well Pennies.
This song is slower but still upbeat. I adore The Well Pennies, and this is one of my favorite songs by them. It puts a smile on my face and is great for lazy afternoons in the sunlight.
Notable lyrics: "This heart in me / It feels like a feather but hurts like the sting of a bee / I know it's fine / Cause I can bring the rattle and you can bring that shine"
2. "I Won't Let You Down" by OK Go.
Aside from being one of the coolest music videos (seriously, give it a watch), this song is catchy and upbeat. Mastering the clapping pattern while driving around town is not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
Notable lyrics: "And I won't let you down, no I won't let you down / I won't let you down, my love".
3. "Make This Leap" by The Hunts.
I love that this song features a male and a female singer. It has great energy and pep, but is grounded and sweet, too.
Notable lyrics: "We were young / I used my paper telescope / To show you the stars and then win your heart".
4. "Fire and Dynamite" by Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors.
This is one of my favorite songs to sing when I drive. The lyrics are so sweet, and the song is full of passion. It's energetic and driven.
Notable lyrics: "You are a novel in a sea of magazines / You make me nervous, you make my heart beat"
5. "Follow You" by Ben Rector.
If you spent any time on the road in Nashville last spring or summer, chances are that you saw me yelling this song at the top of my lungs. I love the lyrics and the meaning behind them. It's such a good reminder for me, and it's a great song to go with the words.
Notable lyrics: "Leave all your trouble / Leave all your sorrow / Set down your burden / Come on and follow".
I am excited to find new music to sing in the car this spring, but I love being reminded of my old favorites. Listening to these old playlists has made me appreciate how things were this time last year. So much has changed since then, but it's nice to remember things I had forgotten. Now, I am doing most of my driving around in Birmingham, so it's nice to have a familiar playlist to sing as I make my way to new restaurants, stores or doctor's offices.
