I'm The Windows Down Kind Of Girl

Ball cap and cutoff or little black dress- I'm still me.

I'm The Windows Down Kind Of Girl
Lori Terstriep

Old cutoff t-shirt passed down from my brothers, sitting in the tractor for hours, with a view of acres of a field painted in front of me or freshly painted nails, with a little black dress on, about to go out to a nice dinner, with the candle light making the restaurant glow-either way, I'm still me.

You ever heard of the saying that goes a little like this, “You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl?” This simple line sums up me perfectly.

I was raised nowhere near the city limits, take the old blacktop road about a few miles outside of the village of Payson and there you’ll see the tan ranch house surrounded by fields and barns. That’s home to me, that’s where all my favorite stories from my childhood come from, and that’s where I will always go back to.

However, don’t let my country girl appearance fool you. There is a side to me that loves traveling to big cities. The tall building painting a beautiful picture in the sky line and all the various sounds making a different kind of music to me ears than I am used to on the farm. When I step onto the sidewalk of the city and you wonder why I stopped walking, just give me a minute because I am most likely just in awe.

I’ll always be the little girl wearing her rubber boots, standing in the middle of a cow pasture mimicking every movement my dad makes. I’ll always be that little girl standing on top of the roof holding a nail gun, just helping my dad redo the roof. I’ll always be that little girl that gets excited to spend a day shopping and getting my nails done with my mom. I’ll always be that little girl that hates and squeals at the thought of touching a frog or anything slimy. But that little girl is growing up and is ready to make her mark on the world, even if that means putting aside that country girl for a moment or two to make her dreams come true.

My parents have given me so much. They have stood by myside and they have helped shape me into the person I am today. They have helped me believe in myself and believe in the dreams that I have. That’s why I am ready to travel, to do things on my own, to go and explore and find new places. My parents have given me so much that if I stop now, I would simply be letting their hard work go to waste, right?

I’m going to travel and make a name for myself. I’m going to take the road that leads me to new adventures and teaches me more about myself. I’m going to take my dreams of helping others and put them into action. I’m simply just going to take the small town girl to the city, but will always know where home is.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
