Last Tuesday, the Ohio Senate passed a controversial pro-life piece of legislation dubbed the “heartbeat bill”, which would ban abortions on unborn babies with a beating heart. The legislation also holds an exception for the extremely rare case of a mother's life being in danger. The bill is currently on the desk of Ohio Governor John Kasich, who over the past two years has opposed similar legislation due to concerns of a so-called unconstitutional restriction on womens' ability to access abortion.
Though, as stated above, Kasich has opposed such legislation in the past, it was the recent victory of President-Elect Donald Trump that empowered the Ohio General Assembly to pass such a bill again. The Assembly believes that with a new president at the helm, one who has vowed to nominate conservative Supreme Court and federal justices, Kasich may have a higher likelihood of signing the bill in anticipation of it getting passed in the higher courts. “A new president, new Supreme Court appointees change the dynamic, and there was consensus in our caucus to move forward,” said Senate President Keith Faber (R-Celina). “I think it has a better chance than it did before.”
The legislation, if passed, would be a huge win for the pro-life community, as well as, obviously, the millions of babies it will save from abortion in the future. According to the Mayo Clinic, an unborn babies heart begins to form during the fifth week of pregnancy, along with its brain, spinal cord, and other organs. Only a week later, during the sixth week, does the unborn babies heart begin to actively pump blood.
Abortion ‘activists’ and leftists nationwide are, of course, outraged at such legislation that would protect the fundamental rights to live of these unborn babies. Such threats to the so-called ‘right to choose’ infuriate the left, as exemplified by the outrage directed towards Texas Governor Greg Abbott, whose office has been inundated with mailed-in used tampons from such abortion ‘activists’ and leftists upset at separate new legislation introduced requiring women to bury or cremate an aborted unborn baby. While this type of outward manifestation of these 'activists' anger is clearly insane and disgusting, the legislation brings humanity back into focus on the subject of the unborn baby, whose prior forms of 'disposal' have included being poured down the drain, ala Planned Parenthood.
According to CNN.com, “If Kasich signs the bill, or if he does nothing within 10 days, the measure would become law early next year. A veto would stop the bill unless three-fifths of the state House and Senate vote for an override. Should the bill become law, a court battle likely would ensue. The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio already has said it would press a legal challenge.”
