Energy is in the air as the 2016 Wimbledon Championships approaches, beginning on Monday. Wimbledon is one of tennis's major tournaments, also known as a "Grand Slam." As always, the men's champion will take home $1,880,000. However, with recent drastic changes among the rankings and players, it is difficult to anticipate this year's winner.
Many of the men's top players are looking to seize the Wimbledon title this year, in the hopes of increasing their rankings. Roger Federer, a constant crowd favorite, did not play in this year's French Open due to an injury. However, Federer notes that if he could win one more slam, he would choose Wimbledon.
Andy Murray also craves another slam win. He was the runner-up at the French Open in May, losing to the number one seed, Novak Djokovic. Murray recently returned to his former coach, Ivan Lendl, who helped Andy win Wimbledon in 2013. Perhaps winning will help him occupy Djokovic's number one spot.
Novak Djokovic, however, is not interested in relinquishing his position at any time. Over the past few years, his reign has flourished, winning twelve grand slams. If Novak can maintain his hard work and domination, he has a high chance of winning Wimbledon.
Of course, the top three players are not the only competitors. Other players amongst the top ten are hungry for the title. Stan Wawrinka, a fairly modest player, is extremely capable of knocking out the triple threat. Richard Gasquet, Kei Nishikori, Tomas Berdych, and Dominic Thiem have also been climbing in the rounds, often making it to the quarterfinals or semifinals of major tournaments. Without Rafael Nadal playing, their chances of winning have increased dramatically.
The two weeks of Wimbledon that lie ahead will keep tennis fans on edge, As the grand slam tournaments always do, Wimbledon will bring new surprises, and create history.
