I Will Not Fail This Year

Don't feel discouraged if you get off track.

I Will Not Fail This Year
ABC 7 News

Hooray, it is finally 2017! I, and I'm sure a majority of you, made so many plans and "resolutions for 2016. I again, and I'm sure a majority of you, never actually went along with them for the whole year. Why? For one, we are lazy and/or busy creatures.

We have depended on our technology to do a lot of simple things. Cell phones, cars, computers, 3D printers, and more. It's going overboard with the amount of technology we have that is capable of taking away the simple tasks that we seem to have. However, technology is not making it easy for us by any means, but it certainly isn't the only reason we have to blame.

If we're being honest, most of us are always doing something. We wake up, go to school/work, come home and relax or study, go to sleep (maybe), and start all over. Not to mention eat, go to the bathroom, socialize, etc. But since when do we get the chance to go to the gym? Or to the bar? Or to the movies? There's bills to pay, places to go, shopping to do. We just don't have the time for these luxuries that we wanted to accomplish in the new year.

So this is when I say that odds are, we will make a New Year's Resolution, if we haven't already. But we will fail. No matter how much we try to convince ourselves that this time will be different; no matter how often we say we will change; and no matter how hard we work to achieve are goal, we are simply doomed to fail.

The solution is to make it a monthly or even weekly goal instead. Making a smaller, more achieveable goal will make what ever the resolution is more attainable and motivational. Also try doing simpler steps first.

For example, if you want to lose weight do some of these things first before you hit the gym and never return.

  • Cut the sugar. It seems impossible, but even if you just stopped eating candy or drinking soda on a regular basis, you'd be surprised how much weight you may actually lose.
  • Drink more water. I'm the worst at drinking water, trust me. I fill up my water bottle half way for a reason, and yet I still can't finish it all. But it has many nutrients that keep you healthy and hydrated.
  • Eat less snacks like chips or cookies. It seems nearly impossible to not eat those pre bagged snack-sized food items that you can buy in bulk. They're perfect when you just need to eat something for a snack. But they're not the greatest for you. Try some fruit instead.

Obviously eating healthy and going to the gym are steps for the future, but hopefully starting small like this will help get you started.

Regardless of your goal, don't feel discouraged if you get off track. It's completely normal and understandable. Just don't give up and keep going. As Dory would say, “Just Keep Swimming”!

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
