On Jan. 30, Leonardo DiCaprio won the Screen Actors Guild award for Best Actor for his role as 19th century fur trapper Hugh Glass in "The Revenant." In it, DiCaprio's character ends up being mauled by a bear and left for dead by his own huntsmen. While I have not seen the film yet, based on the trailer alone, I would be surprised if the film is not up for Oscars in other categories like Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, and Best Director.
This is the first time that DiCaprio has won a Screen Actors Guild award, though he has been nominated many times, including for his roles in "J. Edgar," "The Departed," and "The Aviator." While this is a huge accomplishment in itself, this also means a lot for DiCaprio in terms of his odds for winning the Oscar for Best Actor this year. For the past ten years in a row, the same actor that has won the SAG award has gone on to win the Oscar as well.
This is big news. Leonardo DiCaprio has been notorious for just barely not getting an Oscar. In fact, the Internet has jokingly mocked him for it by creating dozens of memes about it. If he wins, what will happen to all of the Leonardo DiCaprio Oscar-related memes like these?
I suppose Internet users will have to find someone else to create tons of memes about. If you think about it, it is much better for people to be outraged that Leonardo DiCaprio hasn't won an Oscar than for people to be outraged that he had. Regardless, it seems like the movie has incredible reviews, so I encourage everyone to check it out. Tune in to see how it plays out for Leonardo DiCaprio on Feb. 28 on ABC.
