I have been binging Will and Grace for a little over a week now, so I can catch up to watch it re-air on NBC. Will and Grace for those of you who don't know was a show on NBC from 1998-2006. It is a show about a gay guy living with his best friend who was a girl and their life together trying to find love. It was a great and hilarious show but on top of that, it was a revolutionary show. It was a revolutionary show because it was the first show centered around a gay male character. What I feel paved the way for that show was Ellen that came out a couple years beforehand, that had a character and a person in real life come out. One thing also you have to understand is at this time being gay was frowned upon too many people still. Ellen literally had funding pulled from her show after she came out, just to give you an idea.
Will and Grace though, was the show that is known for paving the way for gay culture and TV Shows like Modern Family. The show though seems to be the best example of gay culture and what it is like to be gay and the show is still easily applicable to today's culture. There is no show quite like it and no show that can bring the gay community to life like that show. My favorite element of the show is how they can depict Will a very calm go with the flow type of gay guy and his friend Jack who is flamboyant and gay in the same space because there is not just one side to gay guys. Also, Will and Grace's relationship represents what I think is a relationship that is so real and nonstereotypical because they are just normal people living normal lives. Then on the flip-side, you have Jack and Karen's relationship that completely fits all the stereotypes. Jack is flamboyant gay who party's all the time and is obsessed with drama and fashion and has many "relationships". Then Karen is his friend and also Grace's assistant who is a socialite that just drinks all the time and buys Jack whatever he wants just because she like the company. Their relationship is also very outward, where Will and Grace's is just going with the flow. Overall it is a good show I would highly recommend it and I hope NBC will do it justice.
