I Will Always be a California Girl

Although I've lived in Maryland most of my life, I'll always be a California girl at heart!

"California girls, we're unforgettable. Daisy dukes, bikinis on top. Sun-kissed skin, so hot" — You know the rest. For those who do not know me personally, I'm originally a California girl; I lived in San Jose, California with my family for about four and a half years, before I moved to Maryland.

Back in 2014 and 2015, I had the pleasure of going to back to my native state of California as well as my hometown, San Jose. At first, I did not want to go back to California — for reasons I don't even remember — but when I did go back, I felt more at home than I've ever in Maryland.

Driving down the 101 at the late hours of the night, seeing the smog throughout the city during the day, it felt like home. Now, being 21, I have a preference over southern California than northern California. Going to Los Angeles and being in the same town as all the celebrities you see on television, it felt magical. I guess that's why I feel destined to go back there when I finish school.

Even though Los Angeles is one of my favorite cities, there's something about San Jose that just keeps me coming back. Besides the fact that I was born there, going back and seeing all of the buildings in the mid-1990s, change into what you see in your average day suburb really opens you eyes.

There some reasons why I do some things or I like particular things because they all started when I was in California.

1. My love for dance.

I started dancing at the age of two. Every Tuesday, when I lived in San Jose, my mom would take me to dance class. Even though, there had been a break until I turned 7, I had always loved dancing. Even now, I'm in early twenties and I'm STILL dancing.

2. Going to the beach.

I wasn't always a lover of going to the beach. Sitting on the sand, getting a tan, going in the water; it didn't appeal to me. It wasn't until I went to Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach to TRULY understand why people go to the beach. Some want to relax, while others just want to have fun and that's okay! No wonder, I like looking out at the water whether on a cruise ship or a beach.

3. Shopping!

I had always loved to go shopping, but when I went to the Great Mall in Milpitas, California; which is only a few minutes from San Jose, I discovered a new place to shop. Not only that, but when I went to the store for the first time, I haven't stopped going there. It's even better now that they have a few more stores on the East Coast, especially close to DC.

4. My Sense of Adventure.

In order to go to the northern cities in California, you'll have to take the Pacific Coast Highway. What I loved about this highway is that you get the best of both worlds. You can look out at the Pacific Ocean, while driving beside hills, and mountains. It's a peaceful drive. I guess that's why I'm so used to taking long drives in the car. It calms me, especially, if I can look at the water.

5. My Love for Disney.

Since the day I was born, you could always find me in front of the television watching a Disney movie. Disney is apart of me not only because I've watched possibly ever Disney movie known to man, know every song, and even meeting the Mouse himself, it's because that's what drives the passion I have for animation and entertainment, which is hopefully my dream of expertise. I someday want to work for Disney because the storytelling behind each movie, which made me fall in love in the first place.

I'll always be a California girl at heart. Whatever I decide to pursue after I graduate college, I will somehow find my way back to California; and you quote me on that! And besides I haven't been to Disneyland yet.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
