If You Don't Vote, You Can't Complain

If You Don't Vote, You Can't Complain
Jake Murray

In case you have not heard, there is a presidential election coming up in November.

Either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton will be the next president of the United States of America, and that is scary for a lot of people. I've heard people talk about how they do not want to vote because they feel like their vote does not matter, and this bothers me because voting is one of our most important civic duties.

We are lucky to live in a place that allows their citizens to vote for their leaders, and have our voices heard. If everyone took the idea that their vote does not matter, then nobody would vote and our democracy would fall apart.

Now I know there are people that say they do not want to vote for somebody that they do not support, and I completely understand that, however that is not an excuse to not vote. If there is no candidate that you really want to vote for, think of the values that are most important to you and see where the candidates stand on those issues and use that to choose someone.

As a person who was born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, I have been around politics my entire life. Being around politics for so long has also exposed me to people complaining about politics all the time. In my opinion, if you had the opportunity to vote and chose not to, you have absolutely no room to complain. If you vote, one of two things will happen, your candidate will win and you will be happy, or your candidate will lose and you can then complain.

One of the most important reasons to vote, if you need some extra motivation, is that we young adults are the largest subsection of potential voters and the people we elect will enforce policies that will influence our lives down the road. For example, as a college student, this election is huge because within the next four years I will have graduated college and will be looking for a job. I am hoping that whichever candidate wins this election will create enough jobs to ensure that I can have a career after college.

I see people on Twitter talking about how awful our government is, and how much they just do not want to vote, but by not voting the problems facing our nation will just be exacerbated. I know there will be a lot of people that still won't vote, but to the ones on the fence, go vote. In the time it took you to read this article, you could have already voted, so on election day get out to the polls, and let your voice be heard.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.
