Why Your Comfort Zone Isn't Really Comfortable

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.

Being comfortable is great because you are safe and don’t have to worry about things not turning out the way you expected. At the same time, being comfortable can also be a bad thing. Pope Benedict XVI once said, “The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for great things.”

If you never step out of your comfort zone, life becomes just another routine. Doing the same thing everyday can get really boring after a while. There is nothing wrong with having a routine, but you should also try new things often. If you don't try new things, you can miss out on things you never thought you would like. The truth is people get comfortable with what's familiar, and when you get too comfortable, you don't allow yourself room to grow, but the sooner you step away from your comfort zone, the sooner you’ll realize that it wasn’t really all that comfortable. Think of it like this: when you were a kid you probably had a favorite pair of shoes. Since you were a kid, though, you were growing, and that probably meant those shoes wouldn't fit for much longer. You were growing, but those shoes weren't. Think of how uncomfortable it would be to walk around in them. In the same way, our comfort zones are not comfortable because they keep us from growing.

You don't have to do something major to step out of your comfort zone. If you try one new thing everyday, then you are moving in the right direction. These things should challenge you and even scare you because if they do not, then they will not change you and are probably not worth your time.

Mark Twain once said, "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did so. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor, and catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, dream, discover." A ship is safe in the harbor, but that's not what ship's are built for, and that's not what you were made for either. Again, you were made for great things.

We must let go of the good to grab hold of the better. If this means you have to step out of your comfort zone, then so be it. Great things never came from comfort zones either way. At any given time, we have the choice to retreat back to safety or to step out of where you are safe and comfortable. Only one of these will help you grow. I hope you make the right choice.

“The further you get away from yourself, the more challenging it is. Not to be in your comfort zone is great fun." — Benedict Cumberbatch

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
