Why Your Best Friend Is Your True Soulmate

Your best friend is the one person who you can trust the most in your life.

7 words: the most important person in your life.

What person fits that description?

The romantic movies and tv shows that I grew up watching always talked about that one person would understand you better than everyone. I assumed that I would find someone who would fulfill all of my fantasies and fairytales. I wanted someone who knew when I was upset and knew what to do to cheer me up. I wanted someone who could talk to me for hours and hours on end without ever getting bored. I wanted someone who I could rely on: someone I could trust.

The unconditional love that I was seeking had actually been present in my life for a long time. I soon realized that this person that I was looking for was right in front of me for the past 13 years: my best friend.

My best friend is single-handedly the most important person in the world. She is the one person I share everything with. She is the one person who I know will never judge me. She is the one person who will always have my back.

When we first met in the 3rd grade, my life was definitely changed for the better. Since then, there have been countless sleepovers, millions of bad inside jokes, and so much love between us. She ended up moving to LA our sophomore year of high school and when she left, it felt like half of my heart had gone with her. This was when I realized that there would be no one like her in my life. There was no way that I could find someone who understood me more than her. This is when I knew that she was my true soulmate.

Even if I did find that fairytale love that I wanted as a kid, my best friend will always be the one person who I can tell everything to. She has shaped me into the person that I am today. She has made me more confident, fun, and has helped validate my stupid ideas and jokes. We could be with a hundred other people and only be laughing at each other because of something dumb we did 5 years ago. It’s hard to replace a bond like that.

Now, you may be thinking that this sounds like a love letter to my best friend. Well, it is. I love her more than I’ve ever loved anyone in this world. I owe everything that I am to her and I know that my life would be 100 times worse if she wasn’t in it.

The word “soulmate” isn’t often used to describe a best friend, but it is a perfect word to define the bond between two best friends. The late night boy talks, the horrible Snapchat pictures, the constant tagging in Instagram memes, the jokes that only we think is funny: these all describe the amazing relationship that I have with my best friend. The person that you do these things with is a person who should be cherished. That person, your best friend, is your true soulmate.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
