Why You Shouldn't Worry About This Election

Why You Shouldn't Worry About This Election

I'm not worried about who our next president is going to be. By saying I’m not worried, I don’t mean that I don't care or that I'm not going to vote.

I'm an American, yes, but I'm a Christian first.

I believe in a God who is 10+ million times more powerful than anyone in a government position. I know a God who has known this election’s outcome since the beginning of time. I am a child of the KING who is going to reign for all of eternity. When I think of the magnitude of that reality, I can't help but feel assured that this election really isn't as big of a deal as most people think.

I’m just as frustrated as you probably are with the candidates that we have to choose from, and I know that many people have decided that it would be best to not even vote. If you’re in that category, I’m not going to try to convince you otherwise, but I am going to suggest that you at least devote time to praying for our country’s leaders.

1 Timothy 2:1-2 (ESV)

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.”

I’ve experienced the power of prayer in some huge ways recently, and I can tell you for a fact that God is not dormant. He hears our prayers, and He actively answers them in the ways that He knows they need to be answered. This election isn’t sneaking up on Him, and He isn’t abandoning us by letting Clinton or Trump get elected.

Romans 13:1 (ESV)

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”

Obeying the law and those in authority over us is something that we are called to do as Christians (as long as the law is not going against God). But we know that this world isn’t perfect, so we shouldn’t expect our government, or president, to be. Thankfully, we don’t need a perfect president. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, has got that covered! He is as PERFECT as perfect gets. Trusting in Him throughout this difficult election, and throughout the rest of our lives, is all that we need to be doing. He is the answer.

Psalm 146:3 (ESV)

“Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.”

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
