Friends-giving is a tradition that is often overlooked by groups of friends, especially when each person is busy finishing up with work, midterms, or trying to book flights home. But this extension of Thanksgiving is something that can remind students and professionals alike that their friends are the very reason their lives are full of joy and love. Here are some reasons there should never be an excuse to skip out on Friends-giving.
1. The food.
Honestly, what more of a reason do you need other than two Thanksgiving feasts? More turkey, potatoes in all forms, casseroles on casseroles, roasted veggies, baked ham, and of course the wine (can't forget about the wine). But really, sharing a home-made (or maybe store bought ... not everyone can adult properly) meal between friends is a flawless activity. Why skip it?
2. Everyone is welcome.
Sometimes you just don't know what people are going through. Maybe a friend of yours cannot make it home for Thanksgiving and Friends-giving is their only alternative to share a meal and feel thankful. Maybe a coworker is lonely in a new city and would love to make friends. Once you open a Friends-giving up to all, the possibilities are endless.
3. Bonding time.
Sure, you see your friends at work, class, bars, and outings, but how often do you see them in an intimate setting where you guys can genuinely ask about each other's lives and well-being? The answer is probably not often. Getting to spend a holiday, even an early one, with the people you spend most of your time with can lead to great connections and even more to be thankful for.
4. The laughs before the obligations.
Let's be honest, sometimes going home for Thanksgiving is a chore. Family members asking what you're doing with your life... Do you have a significant other? Are you getting paid enough? When are you graduating? The questions can be daunting, but your friends just get you. Their only intentions are to spend time with you and connect, so may as well soak up the love before you're forced to answer impossible life questions.
5. People are what matters.
Nothing is more important that who you choose to surround yourself with. Having the experience of a holiday centered around gratefulness and love is something no one should give up. Spending it with friends you've chosen to be in your life is just as important as going home to family for the holiday. Work and school can wait, because people are what matters.
