With Mother's Day coming up, you may be trying to scrounge together some money to get your mom at least a card and some chocolates. But you should also give her, and the other women in your life, some extra appreciation for a different reason.
The feminist movement is very prevalent in our society. Famous women such as Emma Watson and Taylor Swift give speeches on gender equality. If you have ever seen Tina Fey's show "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" (it's hilarious, I recommend it), then you have seen the sarcasm towards the way women are treated and the genius that is Tina Fey making a strong statement, "Females are strong as hell." Although feminism is constantly in the media, I get the sentiment from my peers that a lot of young women in college have not hopped onto the crusade for gender equality.
I asked the girls in my dorm their feelings on feminism, specifically if they would consider themselves feminists. The majority of them said that they wouldn't. This made me wonder because I have three very strong women in my life who are all strong feminists. I then realized that besides there being a generational gap, the three women in my life are the reason why young women in college do not feel like they're associated with feminists. Our mothers, aunts, sisters, grandmas, teachers, and coaches have helped paved the way so we can enjoy our years without the difficulties that they had to face.
So, while you may be worrying about Mother's Day (or maybe you completely forgot until I mentioned it), you should also find some time after exams to thank the strong women in your life. Thank them for never giving up on what they wanted to do. They have helped us and pushed us to achieve highly just like them. Fortunately, there are a few barriers that they helped break down, so we do not have to come up against them. While you may not consider yourself a feminist, you should consider yourself grateful and share your gratitude. I guarantee that you will make someone's day.
I would like to dedicate this article to my mother, sister, and aunt who are the strongest women in my life and helped me realize that I can achieve anything.
